You don't need to be technical to grade your own website. These six tests take about ten minutes total, and they'll tell you whether your site needs a tune-up or a rebuild.
Pull up your site on your phone — not your computer. Can you read it without pinching and zooming? Can you tap the phone number and call? More than half your visitors are on a phone, and if the site fights them, they leave.
Show your homepage to someone who doesn't know your business for five seconds, then close it. Can they tell you what you do, where you do it, and how to contact you? If not, neither can your customers.
If your homepage takes more than about three seconds to load on a phone connection, a meaningful share of visitors give up before they see anything. Slow sites also rank worse on Google — it's a double penalty.
Check your hours, prices, team photos and copyright year. If your site says © 2019 or lists a service you stopped offering, visitors assume the whole business is neglected — fair or not.
Search for what you do plus your town — 'dentist in Glastonbury', 'plumber near New Haven'. If you're not on the first page, your website and your Google profile need work, not just your luck.
Are your reviews visible? Your license or insurance info? Real photos of real work? People hire businesses they trust, and trust is built with specifics — not stock photos of smiling strangers.
Passed all six? Your site is in good shape. Keep your content fresh and your reviews coming, and check again in a year.
Failed one or two? You probably need targeted fixes — a faster host, updated content, or a better Google profile — not a full rebuild.
Failed three or more? Patching an outdated site usually costs more over time than replacing it. A modern rebuild fixes the foundation instead of the symptoms.
